ABERDEEN, S.D. – An article by recent Northern State University graduate Chase Sievers has been published in two partnered online journals.

Sievers, of Aberdeen, is a spring 2018 NSU graduate majoring in criminal justice. His article, “The American Torture Problem,” is featured in both “Compass” and “Starting Points.”

The article, which can be found online here, examines the Central Intelligence Agency’s enhanced interrogation program as applied during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It was Sievers’ final paper for his Counterterrorism and Cybersecurity Policy course at NSU.

“Compass,” a project of the Tocqueville Forum at Northern Illinois University, is a journal that focuses on the work of talented undergraduates with original, important ideas relating to American democracy. “Starting Points," associated with the University of Missouri, is a project of the Kinder Institute that publishes work by undergrads, graduate students and professors.

Both journals also accepted a second article by Sievers, “Lethal Autonomous Weapon Systems and the Law of Armed Conflict,” his final paper for his International Law and Organizations course at Northern. Publication is pending for this article, which explores the potential use of independent weapons guided solely by artificial intelligence.
