ABERDEEN, S.D. – Several Northern State University students will be participating in the upcoming SHRM competition in Washington state and the Community Banking Research Competition.

Northern students Joellen Miller of Houghton; Zachary Ulmer of Lisbon, N.D.; Nick Murphy of Elk Point; and Alexander Gray of Pierre will compete in the Society for Human Resource Management Student Case Competition in Tigard, Ore., on March 31 and April 1. The team will be accompanied by NSU business faculty member Dr. Kristi Bockorny. The group will be given a case to work on regarding a company problem and develop a strategy to help that company.

Northern students Allie Hughey of Smithville, Miss.; Lauren Rulofson of Cottonwood, Calif.; Jamie Fuse of Ladysmith, Wis.; Zachary Ulmer of Lisbon, N.D. and Jacob Schweitzer of Emery will compete in the Community Banking Research Competition against 43 other teams from around the country for a chance to win $1,000. The team is sponsored by Drs. Robert Preston and Todd Muehler of the School of Business and will team up with a local community bank to develop and produce a report on management and board succession. NSU’s team represents the only group competing from South Dakota.

This is an opportunity to build a further understanding of the community bank business model and the role community banks play in their local communities, and is a mechanism for connecting academics and millennials with the community banking industry.

According to a release sent out by the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS), “The student teams are competing for a chance to get their work published in an academic journal, an opportunity to attend the fifth annual CSBS-Federal Reserve Community Banking Research Conference and an academic scholarship. Competition finalists will be announced in early May. The top three scoring teams will be announced May 25, 2017, from the State-Federal Supervisors Symposium in New Orleans, La. The announcement will be streamed live on the competition website at www.csbs.org/bankcasestudy.”
