ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University’s first-year student retention has climbed to 77%, well above the national average for public universities of 72%.

Britt Lorenz, executive director of Student Success indicated retention is influenced by a number of factors. “From personalized academic resources to scholarship offerings, students at NSU are well-supported. The Northern experience is marked with numerous opportunities to engage with faculty, peers, and the entire campus community, helping students achieve their academic and personal goals.”

Lorenz also indicated retention rates reflect a university’s success in supporting students from their first year through to graduation, ensuring they have a fulfilling, well-rounded college experience. Academics play a key role as does faculty and staff connections, wellness, financial support and a sense of belonging on campus. “By focusing on these key areas, Northern continues to enhance an environment where students feel engaged, valued and prepared throughout their journey to graduation and beyond.”

“Our commitment to first-in-its-class housing, safety and mental health resources helps our students succeed. From our orientation programs to our community-building efforts, students know they can achieve their goals in the supportive environment of Northern,” said Sean Blackburn, dean of students.
