ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University introduced an updated Thunder the Wolf mascot costume during New Student Convocation on Friday, Aug. 22, and across Northern's social media channels. The week of Aug. 25, Thunder made appearances across campus welcoming new employees and students, along with touring Aberdeen Public Schools. Thunder will be making more appearances throughout the community this fall, including at upcoming football games at Northern and other community events.
The new costume replaces the previous version that had been in use since 2015. After nearly a decade of regular appearances at athletic, campus, and community events, the mascot needed replacement due to wear and tear.
When the original costume manufacturer went out of business, Northern State worked with BAM Mascots of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, to create the updated design. BAM was recommended by multiple universities and sports organizations in the industry. The process officially kicked off in the spring of 2024, taking more than a year to complete the new costume.
"When the old costume needed to be replaced, I was cautious about updating him," said Chad Hatzenbuhler, director of communications and marketing. "I brought two options to the committee, and surprisingly everyone was in favor of giving him a new look."
The design committee included current students, who supported updating Thunder with a more wolf-like appearance and welcoming feel.
The updated mascot includes multiple apparel options for different events, including football gear, basketball uniforms and general campus attire. Additional wardrobe options will be added over time.
“Having Thunder make his debut during New Student Convocation was the perfect way to celebrate this exceptional class of Northern students,” said Dean Sean Blackburn. “Thunder embodies the spirit of Northern State University, and we love how he unites not just our campus, but the entire community.”
“Thunder is one of the integral parts of Wolves Athletic events and the Northern State community," said Ashley Gauer, Senior Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations. "We look forward to seeing this revitalized version of everyone's favorite Wolf at our contests this season and into the future!"
Thunder the Wolf has been Northern State University's mascot since 1993, when he replaced the original mascot Waldo during a basketball game. The mascot received its first major update in 2015.
"It was exciting to see the updated Thunder be welcomed by the community! The best part was seeing everyone's reaction and wanting to take photos with Thunder and their smiles. You just can't help but smile when you see Thunder!" Hatzenbuhler said.
