ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University announces two one-credit courses this fall, specifically designed for teachers seeking to enhance their knowledge and instructional practices.

These courses aim to equip educators with the necessary tools to implement South Dakota’s new social studies standards effectively.

The first course, HIST/POLS 592 American Foundations: American Founding, caters to elementary teachers. Led by faculty members Professors Dave Grettler (History), Christian Pirlet (Education), and Jon Schaff (Political Science), this one-credit course provides both content and methodological guidance on the founding of the United States of America. Participants will explore the reasons behind the American Revolution and gain a deeper understanding of the principles underpinning the United States Constitution. The course includes a one-day workshop on Aug. 8 at the Northern campus in Aberdeen, S.D., with the remaining content delivered online.

The second course, HIST/POLS 592 American Foundations: Civil Rights, targets secondary education teachers. Co-taught by Professors Ric Dias (History), Christian Pirlet (Education), and Jon Schaff (Political Science), this course delves into the rich history of civil rights in the United States. Participants will analyze grassroots movements, government policies, and significant court cases from Reconstruction to the Civil Rights Movement. The course features a one-day workshop on Aug. 9 at Northern’s campus in Aberdeen, S.D., followed by online instruction through the semester.

"To make these courses more accessible, Northern State University is pleased to offer them at a reduced rate of $40. Additionally, we are providing a stipend of $150 to teachers attending the one-day workshop, which includes complimentary food and drink," Schaff said. "We believe this is an excellent opportunity for teachers to review content, learn different methodological strategies, and collaborate to enhance social studies education."
