ABERDEEN, S.D. – This spring at Northern State University, “A Writer Reads” will feature readings by three visiting writers, as well as a capstone reading by students taking fiction writing.

Visiting writers will speak to English majors in the classroom and also give public readings of their work. Each reading will take place in the Williams Library Round Room from 4 to 4:45 p.m.

Steven Wingate's Feb. 27 event has been postponed, with a new date to be determined. Wingate, a professor of English at South Dakota State University, will present on digital storytelling. Wingate, a writer of both digital and conventional fiction, will lead students in creating a digital story, using NSU’s campus as a setting.

Other events will take place on the following dates:

Tuesday, March 13: Brenda Donelan, former NSU professor of criminology and author of a cozy mystery series featuring a criminology professor, will present on writing the cozy mystery series. Donelan’s books will be available for sale at her reading, and she will be happy to sign them. Donelan will also visit with students that Thursday about self-publishing and promoting one’s works.

Tuesday, April 10: Elissa Dickey, a writer for the NSU Communications and Marketing Department and an author, will present on writing novels with strong female protagonists and on securing a literary agent. Dickey is an author of upmarket suspense represented by Sharon Pelletier of Dystel, Goderich and Bourret in New York City. Her debut novel, “Without June,” is currently on submission with publishers.

Thursday, April 26: At the capstone event, students taking fiction writing will give a reading of their work.
