ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University School of Business faculty member Ms. Hannah Walters will present a paper co-authored with Dr. Kristi Bockorny on the relevance of general education to business students and graduates at the Marketing Management Association (MMA) Fall Educators’ Conference in Pittsburgh, Pa., in September.
The paper explores the value of a liberal arts business education. The authors propose to assess current business student's perceived relevance of their general education to their business degree in comparison to business school graduates.
“We plan to analyze whether the perceived relevance is consistent between the two groups and/or if the relevance changes after a student graduates and/or has gained personal and professional life experiences,” said Walters, instructor of marketing. “This study is important because corporate professionals are seeking graduates with the ability to clearly communicate, be persuasive, listen, analyze questions and problems, propose solutions, be able to work in teams, be flexible, be able to handle ambiguous situations and be presentable.”
“We believe that business education should provide a foundation of business knowledge and skills within a broad, liberal education,” said Bockorny, assistant professor of management. “Expanding the knowledge of business to include different values, cultures and business practices helps develop students as ethical leaders for a global society.”
MMA has a history of showcasing cutting-edge marketing thought, presented by both practitioners and academicians. The purpose of the MMA Fall Educators' Conference is to share knowledge in teaching effectiveness and ideas for professional development. The conference theme is "Hot Topics within Marketing Education" and will be held from September 20 to 22.
