ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University’s Darcy Usher recently received a Certificate of Recognition from the South Dakota Historical Society’s Board of Trustees for an exhibit she did on William H. Daly.

Usher of Limon, Colo., is a senior studying for her bachelor degree in history with a public history minor.

Usher’s exhibit focuses on Daly’s war years recorded in his personal diary before he returned to Northern to finish his degree after the war. 

She started this project as part of her competitive undergraduate research grant. Drs. Dias and Grettler both advised Usher during the process. Usher also worked with Northern Librarian Stephanie Cossette and Library Director Robert Russell to get her exhibit into Beulah Williams Library.

“It came as a huge surprise to me, as I was I was nominated by the president of the board and selected to receive the certificate at the very end of the semester,” said Usher. “It is a very big honor to be recognized by them especially considering I am currently interning for the director of the board. His secretary told me that they have never had someone receive this award and then go on to intern for them.”

Usher is now working for the South Dakota State Historical Society (SDSHS) in the State Historic Preservation Office to further her work uncovering South Dakota’s rich history.
