Two women holding an award

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University Academic Advisor Rebeccah (Becca) Johnson has received the 2019 Distinguished Service Award from the South Dakota State University College of Nursing.

Johnson was recognized at a ceremony for accelerated nursing graduates held on the NSU campus in December. She received the award for her efforts supporting the SDSU College of Nursing accelerated program, housed in Aberdeen, according to an SDSU news article.

A 2009 SDSU graduate, Johnson started working at Northern in 2014 as the College of Arts and Sciences academic advisor for science and math. As part of this role, she encourages interested students to seek out more information about the accelerated nursing program.

"Becca is an asset to the Science and Math Department at Northern State University, but clearly also an asset to South Dakota State University's Nursing Program,” said Dr. Alyssa Kiesow, Chair and Professor, Science and Math. “Her efforts for both schools help bridge these institutions together, working collaboratively to support students' needs. We appreciate her efforts, and we’re elated she is honored for her contributions to both schools."

NSU College of Arts and Sciences Dean Dr. Joshua Hagen said Johnson is truly deserving of this wonderful recognition.

“Her expertise, professionalism and dedication is well-known across campus and appreciated by faculty, staff and especially students,” Hagen said.

Johnson said she is very honored to receive the Distinguished Service Award.

“I enjoy working with NSU students and helping them achieve the requirements needed for the career path they plan to pursue,” she said. “I have had many advisees complete the SDSU Accelerated Nursing Program hosted on the Northern State University campus and have heard nothing but superior remarks about the experiences these students have gained through the program. I would give this program my highest recommendation to anyone considering to pursue their Bachelor of Science in Nursing.”
