ABERDEEN, S.D. – All three winners in the 2021 Brown County Historical Society research and writing contest are Northern State University students.

First place went to Greg Lux for his paper “Striking Out: Why the Homestead Strike was a Success for No One.” Lux, from Eden Valley, Minn., is a history education major.

James Heisinger received second place for “The Presidential Election of 1876: A Legacy Forgotten.” Heisinger, of Sioux Falls, S.D., is a social science education major.

Laine Converse received third place for “Prohibition in Omaha: Alcohol and the Rise of Organized Crime.” Converse, of Omaha, Neb., is a history education major with a minor in international studies.

Each of the students received a certificate and a cash prize for their winning papers.
