Lori Bruns and Tom Orr

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University’s Dr. Tom Orr and Ms. Lori Bruns are receiving awards from the Society for Health and Physical Educators of South Dakota.

Orr has been selected as the 2018 SHAPE SD College/University Teacher of the Year. He is being recognized for his professional excellence, and his dedication and proficiency in teaching the youth of South Dakota.

NSU Instructor of Health and Physical Education Lori Bruns is also being honored by SHAPE SD this year. Bruns won an award for Health Teacher of the Year for the state of South Dakota, including elementary, secondary and college teachers.

Both Northern faculty members will be honored at the SHAPE SD Awards Ceremony on Oct. 25 at the Sioux Falls Pentagon. 

Orr joined Northern’s faculty in 2011. He is an assistant professor in sport marketing and administration. He received his Ph.D. and M.S. from Indiana University, and previously was a visiting professor for Indiana University and research associate for the Center for Sport Policy and Conduct. Orr has had extensive experience as a player, official, supervisor, coach and sport administrator in numerous sports.

Bruns joined NSU's faculty in 2012. She received a Master of Science degree in health, nutrition and exercise science with a concentration in exercise science in 2009 from North Dakota State University, Fargo, N.D. She also has a Bachelor of Science degree in exercise science from Dakota State University, Madison. At Northern, Bruns is faculty advisor of Physioculture Club (Health, Physical Education Majors and minors club for students).
