Dr. Jeffrey Howard joined NSU's faculty in 2009. He received a Ph.D. degree in human factors psychology from Wichita State University, Wichita, Kan., in 2007; an M.A. degree in experimental psychology from Wichita State University in 2004; an M.S. degree in clinical psychology from Fort Hays State University, Hays, Kan., in 2001; a B.A. degree in psychology from Washburn University, Topeka, Kan., in 1999; and a B.S. degree in radio/TV journalism from Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kan., in 1990.

Dr. Jia has experience as an inpatient behavioral therapist in a psychiatric hospital. He also has experience in grief and bereavement counseling. Dr. Jia worked as a graduate assistant to prepare students for their practicum and internship for two years during his doctoral studies. He has also served as co-instructor at Lindsey Wilson College and Mongolia International University.

Dr. Shalini Mathew is an assistant professor, field coordinator and Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) liaison for the master’s in counseling program. She is a National Board of Certified Counselors nationally certified counselor. She is serving as a site visit team member on the CACREP team of site visitors.
Dr. Mathew earned a doctor of philosophy degree in rehabilitation counseling and counselor education from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (2019), a master of philosophy degree in school counseling from Martin Luther Christian University, India (2014), a master of science degree in health and behavior science from Mahatma Gandhi University, India (2004) and a bachelor of science degree in family and community science with minors in chemistry and zoology from Mahatma Gandhi University, India (2002).
She has five years of experience in higher education in the U.S. and 12 years of experience in private mental health setting and K-12 schools in India. She has experience in curriculum revision, program development, and accreditation (CACREP and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). She also supervised practicum and internship students for three years while earning her doctorate.

Dr. Monte Meyerink joined NSU’s faculty as an assistant professor in 2022. He has experience teaching mathematics to students in grades 5-16 and is the director of the NSU Math Clinic. At Northern, Dr. Meyerink primarily teaches undergraduate-level mathematics and mathematics education courses as well as a graduate-level research methodology course. His general research interests revolve around the preparation of teachers of mathematics.

I am Northern's academic advisor for elementary and special education, as well as early childhood education and teacher apprenticeship students. Since 2015, I have greatly enjoyed working with Northern students. Before moving to South Dakota, I worked and lived in Minnesota, Illinois, Wyoming, South Korea, and Wisconsin. I graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Eureka College (Illinois) and a master's of science in counseling (K-12 and higher education) from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
