51st annual S.D. Jazz Festival set for Jan. 21 at Northern State University

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The 51st annual South Dakota Jazz Festival will take place on Thursday, Jan. 21, at Northern State University.

The festival will take place in the Johnson Fine Arts Center. Five local school groups will be performing and having jazz clinics with NSU fine arts faculty, following mask, distance and performance protocols:

NSU’s Fogderud to present lecture recital on Jan. 23

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University Assistant Professor of Voice Dr. Marla Fogderud will present a lecture recital, “Grieg and Mozart: Emotion Through Song,” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Jewett Theater.

Joining Fogderud at the recital will be guest pianist Dr. Jean Hellner. The event, which explores how the two composers approached common emotions in their songs, is a co-production of the NSU School of Fine Arts and the Edvard Grieg Society of the Dakotas.

ABERDEEN, S.D. – For Northern State University’s Dominika Blum, growing up around individuals from all over the world gave her a strong global outlook – which is very important when working in the field of international education.

While 2020 has been a year of challenges, there have also been many points of pride this year.

That includes enrollment growth, e-learning increases, and various times where members of our campus community stepped up to help others during this difficult year. These highlights were bright spots during an uncertain time, and we’re proud to share them.

‘An Afternoon of Chamber Music’ set for Nov. 22 at NSU

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State University Symphonic Band and Concert Band will present their upcoming concert, “An Afternoon of Chamber Music.”

The concert will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Jewett Theater. The event will feature performances by the NSU Symphonic Band, under the direction of Dr. Rolf Olson, and the NSU Concert Band, under the direction of Dr. Audrey Miller.

International Education Week at NSU

The Office of International Programs is proud to announce it will host International Education Week with a variety of cultural events. This week is in celebration of the benefits of global diversity and academic exchange programs around the world. Come join us at Lincoln Gallery in Lincoln Hall and beyond for fun and educational events and snacks.

Faculty and staff attended the Campus Town Hall on Monday, where NSU President Dr. Tim Downs reviewed the results of the spring 2020 Campus Climate Survey.

The survey was conducted in April 2020 in accordance with HB 1087, a bill passed in 2019 with the purpose of promoting free speech and intellectual diversity at higher education institutions.
