NSU faculty member named to national marketing association leadership role

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University faculty member Dr. Hannah Walters has been named Vice President of Marketing for the Marketing Management Association.

Walters was voted unanimously into the role, which starts her on the officer’s track for the national academic organization. Her term will run through the end of the MMA 2022 Spring Conference, when she will move to President Elect.

NSU President to Depart Aberdeen Campus

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University President Timothy M. Downs has announced his resignation to pursue a new opportunity in higher education.

In his five years on the Aberdeen campus, Downs presided over positive changes on campus and within the Aberdeen community, including freshman class growth in four of the past five years, a freshman to sophomore retention rate above 73 percent, and major academic and sports facility enhancements. New facilities were funded by donations that amounted to more than $110 million.

NSU Research, Scholarship and Creativity Forum set for April 21

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The 2021 Northern State University Research, Scholarship and Creativity Forum will take place April 21 in the Jewett Regional Science Education Center.

This annual forum is a venue in which Northern undergraduates can present their research or scholarly activities. Oral presentations will be 11 a.m.-12:20 p.m., with the poster session 1-2 p.m.

Article by NSU faculty members accepted in Transnational Journal of Business

ABERDEEN, S.D. – An article by Northern State University faculty members Drs. Kristi Bockorny and Hannah Walters has been accepted for publication in The Transnational Journal of Business.

The article, titled “The Relevance of a Liberal Arts Education to Business School Graduates: An Assessment of Alumni,” will appear in the journal’s June edition. Bockorny and Walters collected survey data from a sample of business alumni in order to assess their perceived relevance of a liberal arts education to their business degree.

NSU Spring Commencement Ceremony set for May 8

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University will hold an in-person spring commencement ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 8, in the Barnett Center.

Guests will be welcome, with each participating graduate receiving four tickets to use for family and friends. Masks will be required per S.D. Board of Regents policy, and attendees will be appropriately spaced throughout the Barnett Center.

National History Day hosted March 18 by NSU

ABERDEEN, S.D. – On Thursday, March 18, Northern State University again hosted the South Dakota Region 2 judging of National History Day 2021, held remotely this year as it was in 2020.

A total of 183 students from schools in Sioux Valley, Waverly South Shore, Britton-Hecla, Florence, Brookings, Summit and Wilmot presented 116 projects.

Projects were judged by a team of 20 Northern students, faculty and staff, plus Presentation College Professor Dr. Brad Tennant.

Educational Studies program provides path for non-education majors to earn teaching certification, master’s degree at same time

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Abby Woytassek Nelson always intended to pursue teaching, and Northern State University’s Educational Studies Secondary Education program provided the perfect opportunity.

The new program is specifically designed for students like Nelson – candidates who have completed a bachelor’s degree and wish to pursue certification to teach in South Dakota while also earning a master’s degree.
