ABERDEEN, S.D. – In February, the Aberdeen University-Civic Symphony (AUCS) Orchestra will be holding their concert, titled “Romantic Bouquet.”

The concert will take place in the Jewett Theater in the Johnson Fine Arts Center on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 7:30 p.m. The performance will be orchestrated by NSU visiting professor of music and director, Christopher Stanichar, and will feature four themed pieces, one written by Stanichar titled “Sunflowers.”

“It was inspired by a bike ride I took one September evening along the Keystone Trail in Omaha, Nebraska,” said Stanichar. “I was startled by the beauty of the wild sunflowers that grew in abundance there, and it made me think about how the most beautiful things in life are simple and unplanned! In a small way, I tried to infuse the gentle motion of sunflowers dancing in the prairie wind into my score.”

The AUCS will also present Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony no. 8 in G Major, op. 88 for the audience.

Finally, the concert will feature the solo performances of Douglas Moore’s “Silver Aria” from The Ballad of Baby Doe, performed by Taylor Brekke and Carl Maria von Weber’s Clarinet Concerto no. 2, performed by Molly Royals, both winners of the 2018 NSU Concerto Aria Competition.

This concert’s pieces follow the theme of common Valentine’s Day gifts, such as flowers, jewelry, candy and a love poem.

Tickets for the concert are $18 for adults and free for students.
