HURON, S.D. – Elementary and secondary teachers looking to expand their expertise, while engaging face-to-face with their peers, are encouraged to enroll in the Northern State University Master of Education in teaching and learning program at the Huron Community Campus (HCC).

The next cohort begins August 2024. Spaces are limited and the cohort is filling fast. Those interested in participating are encouraged to apply online.

Dr. Christian D. Pirlet, assistant professor of educational technology and coordinator for the program said this program is designed for current teachers wishing to elevate their classroom practices and strengthen their commitment to high-impact pedagogy and learning.

“The Teaching and Learning Huron Cohort offers participants rich learning experiences, while fostering community with one another,” Pirlet said. “Through the incredibly generous support of the Huron University Foundation and the City of Huron, this cohort is offered at a much lower tuition rate than other graduate programs. In an age when more and more graduate degrees are being offered online, the cohort is an excellent opportunity to strengthen pedagogical expertise and building lasting relationships with other participants!”

Pirlet added, Northern faculty teach face-to-face cohort courses at the Huron Community Campus one weekend a month throughout the school year and two weeks in the summer.

“Faculty have fashioned courses to be as practical and applicable as possible,” he said. “Topics include digital technology, teaching English language learners, school law, inclusive education and research-based methodology.”
