ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University is proud to announce the publication of Ethical Boundaries Reimagined: A Feminist Approach to Gatekeeping, a transformative exploration of ethical practice in counselor education. Authored by esteemed faculty members and an undergraduate student, this work redefines traditional approaches to gatekeeping by integrating feminist theory, providing an innovative lens for navigating complex ethical challenges in the field.
This publication stems from years of dedicated research, teaching and professional experience in counselor education. The authors sought to address the evolving needs of students, faculty and practitioners by proposing a model of ethical gatekeeping that prioritizes inclusivity, empowerment and critical reflection.
“Gatekeeping is an essential aspect of counselor education, yet it often lacks the nuance needed to address the diverse realities of today’s students and clients,” said Dr. Mathew. “This book introduces a framework that fosters collaboration, equity and ethical clarity for educators and practitioners alike.”
“We aimed to create a resource that not only guides educators but also challenges them to rethink the boundaries of ethical practice,” said Dr. Jia. “Feminist theory offers a unique perspective that encourages counselors to approach ethical dilemmas with empathy, context and cultural awareness.”
“Working on Ethical Boundaries Reimagined was an incredible learning experience,” said Abiah George. “It gave me the opportunity to explore feminist theory and ethical practices in counseling in a way that felt meaningful and impactful. Collaborating with such knowledgeable professors helped me develop critical thinking skills and a deeper understanding of the complexities of this field. I’m proud to have been a part of a project that challenges traditional ideas and pushes for inclusivity and growth in counselor education.”
