ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University student Maggie Kruger was recently featured in the July/August edition of South Dakota Magazine for her involvement in NSU’s film program and athletics.

Kruger, who is pursuing her studies at Northern, has already made her mark as a filmmaker. Last November, she directed, shot, edited and acted in her short film Faileas. The project, completed in just one month, was created in preparation for a visit by Sean Covel, producer of Napoleon Dynamite, who spoke to the NSU film department and campus community about filmmaking and business.

Faileas—a Gaelic word for “shadow” or “reflection”—follows the story of a college student who has lost himself in the world. The film depicts his journey through anger and isolation, and ultimately, his internal battle between life and death. He is saved when he reflects on his past and realizes his purpose is rooted in the things he loves.

The film featured NSU faculty members Epiphany Knedler and Tim Rickett, as well as Bailen Hayford, a former Northern student. Kruger also wrote and performed an original poem for the film, which went on to earn honorable mention in NSU’s Juried Art Show this past spring.

“It’s been an honor to be included in such a well-known magazine,” Kruger said. “This recognition means a lot because it shows that the hard work I’ve put into making films and growing in this industry is paying off. If this is what I’ve achieved in just one year of college, I’m excited to see what the next few years will bring.”

Kruger said the magazine feature has allowed her to connect with others and share her passion for filmmaking. “At the moment, it’s about getting my name out there. I want to do great things, and this is truly just the start,” she said.
