ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State University Theatre Program will present the musical "Heathers" in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Jewett Theater.

Performances will run at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 12, 13, and 14, as well as at 3 p.m. on Oct. 15.

Based on the 1989 cult classic film by Daniel Waters, “Heathers: The Musical” brings audiences to Westerberg High, a school ruled by the notoriously ruthless, shoulder-padded, scrunchie-wearing triad, the Heathers. When social misfit Veronica falls in and out of their favor, her new boyfriend, the mysteriously dark J.D., begins to put the Heathers in their place—six feet under. The book, music, and lyrics of “Heathers” are by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe.

“This is truly a project that is student-driven,” says director Kane Anderson. “Our students campaigned to do this show and we listened. I’m similarly attracted to exploring the dark side of teen life, particularly in an America that looks very different from what we saw in the 80s. What was once disturbing satire now reads as eerily prophetic. Expect to see a heart-filled show that paradoxically combines hilarious comedy with somewhat horrific homicide.”

Alexis Martin, a junior music education major, plays Veronica. “The most enjoyable thing about this process for me has been getting to dive deep into Veronica’s complex character makeup and really explore showcasing myself as another person. Throughout the show, Veronica goes on a journey of self-exploration and pushing limits, which is a lot of fun to learn and perform.”

Jaycee Nelson, a psychology major from San Diego, Calif., plays one of the titular Heathers. As Heather Chandler, the cruelest of the triad, Nelson admits, “My role is only challenging because I don't like being mean to people and Heather says some harsh things. I struggle to not apologize after some lines. However, the show is bold and spunky. I like participating in things like this because I get to enjoy all the nuances.”

“Heathers” is intended for mature adults. Like its source material, the musical includes adult language, sexual situations, and violence. Please use discretion with younger patrons.

Northern Theatre’s artistic staff includes Dr. Kane Anderson, assistant professor of acting and directing; Noah J. Files, assistant professor of theatre design; and Brian Omland, production manager for the School of Fine Arts. Music instructor Michael Skyles serves as music director for the production.
