ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University alumna Wendy Thorson has been recognized as the 2025 Phi Beta Mu Bandmaster of the Year, an honor given to exceptional band directors for their impact on music education.
Thorson has spent her career developing the music program at Northwestern Area School District, guiding students both musically and personally. Her bands have received many awards, but those who know her say her biggest impact is the way she motivates and supports her students. Her leadership and commitment have earned her the respect of colleagues and the broader music community in South Dakota.
“This award means so much to me because my nomination and votes came from my peers,” Thorson said. “I really look up to the other band directors in this state and feel honored that they believed that I was worthy of being named Phi Beta Mu Bandmaster of the Year.”
Thorson, a graduate of Northern State University, says her experiences at Northern helped shape the way she teaches and works with students. She sees the Phi Beta Mu Bandmaster of the Year award as a reflection of the dedication she’s put into her program and the success of her students.
