ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University Assistant Professor of Music Dr. Marla Fogderud will present a lecture recital on Oct. 3 with Dr. Dianna Anderson, assistant professor of piano at Minot State University.

The event, “Norwegian Art Song in the Golden Age,” will provide an overview of the development of Norwegian language solo song literature in the latter half of the 19th century. The program, which is free and open to the public, will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Krikac Auditorium.

The recital was originally given at Michigan State University in defense of Dr. Fogderud’s doctoral document of the same name. She and Dr. Anderson performed this recital last September at Minot State University under the auspices of the Edvard Grieg Society of the Dakotas.

A native of North Dakota, Fogderud is an active stage performer and recitalist throughout the United States and Europe. She is in demand as a private voice teacher, vocal adjudicator, language coach and translator.

Fogderud received her D.M.A. in voice performance from Michigan State University; M.M. in voice and opera from Wichita State University; and B.M. degree in voice performance from Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn. She also studied at the Norwegian National Academy of Music (Norges musikk høgskolen) in Oslo, where she worked with sopranos Ingrid Bjoner and Siff Pettersen.

In 2018, Fogderud was the recipient of Northern’s Nora Staael Evert Research Award for her project, titled, “Songs of Halfdan Kjerulf: An Edited Anthology.”

Anderson, a pianist, performs frequently as a solo recitalist and collaborator, her repertoire ranging from classical standards to new music. As a founding member of the piano trio, Luminus, with violinist Jon Rumney, and cellist Erik Anderson, she has performed hundreds of concerts bringing the intimate art of chamber music to stages throughout the Midwest. Also with cellist, Erik Anderson, she has a more than 20-year relationship as a duo, performing recitals across the US, and in Italy, Canada, and China.

Much sought-after as a collaborator, she performs regularly with the Minot Symphony Orchestra, Western Plains Opera Company, her colleagues at Minot State University as well as guest artists. A passionate educator, she teaches piano, piano pedagogy, collaborative piano, music theory, aural skills, and Music Students’ Survival Guide, a first-year experience course at Minot State University, as well as maintaining a studio of young pianists.
