NSU Theatre cast members on stage

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State University Theatre Department will present the play "Lasso of Truth" in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Black Box Theatre.

Performances will run at 7:30 p.m. nightly Feb. 27-29 and March 5-6.; and at 3 p.m. March 1. These dates have changed from the original poster.

“Lasso of Truth” unknots the secret origins of the world’s most famous superheroine, Wonder Woman. Poetically reimagined by playwright Carson Kreitzer, the story follows her creator, The Inventor (most well-known for creating the lie-detector), and his two loves, The Wife (brilliant in her own right), and The Amazon (who catches both of their eyes). Their lives play out onstage in counterpoint to The Girl’s as she confronts her own history with Wonder Woman while attempting to woo The Guy into giving up his prized possession—the coveted first appearance of Wonder Woman in “All-Star Comics” No. 8.

Senior theatre major Brittany Quinn (Timber Lake, S.D.) plays The Wife.

“(This show) really emphasizes the value of truth, especially in love, feminism and conventional life,” Quinn said. “Much like taking on a role that involves bondage, facing and discussing the truth can sometimes be uncomfortable. But it is only in discomfort that we can really grow as people and, in this case, as an actor. There has been so much to discover in this show and in this character. It has been an experience and a truth worth pursuing.”

Director Kane Anderson, a self-proclaimed “superherologist” as well as NSU’s Assistant Professor of Acting and Directing, adds that this play gets at the nature of truth when we need it most.

“Wonder Woman’s golden lasso, like her creator William Moulton Marston’s lie-detector, is an instrument for revealing the truth,” Anderson said. “When held by the lasso, no one can resist its compulsion to answer truthfully. Turning on the news today is evidence enough that our society is crying out for more truth—both from our politicians and in our most intimate relationships. Lassoing the truth is a superheroic feat for any of us.”

Also appearing in the production are NSU students Mar Fesler as The Amazon, Reese Uecker as The Inventor, Morgan Wilson as The Girl and Garytt J. Tostenson as The Guy. Artistic staff includes NSU Lecturer of Theatre Design Jordan Jaked Carrier as scenic designer and costume designer, as well as Brian Omland as lighting designer.
