ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University Assistant Professor of Voice Dr. Marla Fogderud will present a lecture recital, “Grieg and Mozart: Emotion Through Song,” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Jewett Theater.
Joining Fogderud at the recital will be guest pianist Dr. Jean Hellner. The event, which explores how the two composers approached common emotions in their songs, is a co-production of the NSU School of Fine Arts and the Edvard Grieg Society of the Dakotas.
A native of North Dakota, Fogderud received her D.M.A. in voice performance from Michigan State University; her master’s in voice and opera from Wichita State University; and her bachelor’s degree in voice performance from Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn. She also studied at the Norwegian National Academy of Music (Norges musikk høgskolen) in Oslo, where she worked with sopranos Ingrid Bjoner and Siff Pettersen.
In 2018, Fogderud was the recipient of Northern’s Nora Staael Evert Research Award for her project, titled, “Songs of Halfdan Kjerulf: An Edited Anthology.”
Due to COVID-19, admission is free to all 2020-21 School of Fine Arts events. Limited seating is available at the upcoming lecture recital; passes will be distributed at the door on a first come, first served basis. Masks are required, and attendees are asked to follow appropriate social-distancing protocols.
