Here’s How to Apply!
- Step 1 - Nominations
Please contact your university’s advisor/international coordinator to learn about being nominated to Northern State University. Your university’s advisor/international coordinator will nominate you or refer you to Northern’s International Programs.
- Step 2 - Exchange Program Application
Once nominated, please complete the International Exchange Application below.
- Step 3 - Required Documents
Please submit the following documents along with your application:
- Current university transcript
- Copy of biographic page of passport
- Declaration of Finances form and corresponding bank statement (Declaration of Finance form will be sent to you and your home coordinator via email)
- English Language Proficiency score (IELTS 5.5 or higher, TOEFL 61 or higher, Duolingo 90 or higher)
- Immunization form
- Step 4 - Acceptance Letter and Form I-20
Once you have submitted an International Exchange Application and required documents, there will be a processing time of 2 to 3 weeks. You will receive an NSU Acceptance Letter and Form I-20 Immigration Document.
- Step 5 - VISA and Immigration
Once you receive an NSU Acceptance Letter and Form I-20, you will receive instructions on how to pay the I-901 fee and schedule an F-1 Student VISA appointment at your nearest United States Embassy or Consulate.
Northern’s International Programs will guide you on completing this stage.
- Step - 6 - Course Registration, Housing, and Health Insurance
Once you have received an approved F-1 Student VISA to study at Northern, you will need to send a copy of the VISA to Northern’s International Programs staff. Afterwards, you will receive instruction on completing NSU Virtual HOWL, registering for courses, completing the housing application, and enrolling in mandatory health insurance.
- Step 7 – Booking Flights and International Student Orientation
The final step prior to arriving at Northern is to book your flight to Aberdeen, South Dakota. Northern’s International Programs holds a mandatory International Student Orientation before the start of every semester (Fall and Spring).
If this is your first semester at Northern, you will be required to be in attendance for this orientation in its entirety. Dates for Northern’s International Student Orientation will be communicated to all incoming exchange students months prior to the start of the semester.
- Step 8 – Schedule a Zoom Meeting
To schedule a Zoom meeting with an International Programs staff member, please contact your university coordinator or email michael.mohammed@northern.edu.
