Northern State University offers international students the chance to spend time with local community families.

Spending time with community families is intended to improve the student’s stay in the United States through American experiences with a family, practice speaking English, and creating international friendships.  Local families apply and attend orientation to be volunteers in the FFP, then the coordinator connects them with students.  Varied monthly activity opportunities are provided through the FFP in addition to events offered around the city of Aberdeen.

Students are expected to cover their own expenses in the program when with their family; for example, paying for their own dinner or movie ticket, and helping pay for gas and hotel on a family trip.  Families are never expected to house their friendship family members.
