Winners announced from Friends of the Arts/NSU Young Artist Competition

Student winners of 2020 NSU Young Artist Competition

ABERDEEN, S.D. – At Northern State University’s Friends of the Arts/NSU Young Artist Competition, 19 talented high school juniors and seniors from South Dakota, North Dakota and Minnesota performed for NSU faculty judging panels throughout the event on Jan. 11.

The event, held in Johnson Fine Arts Center, offered awards with a total of $7,000 in cash prizes, including $1,000 for first-place winners of each category, $500 for second-place winners, and $250 for third-place winners.

NSU Symphonic Band to present ‘Journeys’ Concert Feb. 9

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State University Symphonic Band will present a concert, “Journeys,” at 3 p.m. Feb. 9 in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Harvey and Cynthia Jewett Theater.

The concert, the second in a series of performances with music from around the world, will feature Fritz Hemke, alto saxophone; Aldous Ulvog, piano; Quincy Rudolph, bass; Roger Frank, drums; and Dr. Terry Beckler, cahon.

Northern to display “The Recent Works of Peter Kilian” Exhibition in JFAC Gallery

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The exhibition “The Recent Works of Peter Kilian” by Northern’s Peter Kilian will be on display in the Northern State University Johnson Fine Arts Center Gallery January 13 through February 28. The opening reception will be held 6:30-8:30p.m. on Thursday, February 20.

Peter Kilian is a Professor of Art and the Art Department Chair at Northern State University. This display of recent works by Peter Kilian showcases his dedication to artistic technique and practice. 

Northern’s School of Fine Arts has welcomed five new faculty members since the fall 2019 semester, and among those was Alexis Doerr – an NSU 2017 graduate and alumni.

As an Aberdeen local, Doerr was initially interested in leaving the state to pursue her art degree after graduating from Aberdeen Central High School, but an interest in attending Northern held her attention.

Spring 2020 NSU Noon Forums kick off with visiting Chinese pianist

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The spring 2020 Northern State University Noon Forums will kick off Wednesday, Jan. 29, at noon in the Williams Library Round Room with visiting Chinese pianist Dr. Pei-Lei Lin.

Lin, an associate professor of music education at the University of Jinan, will present “Chinese Piano Music and Music Education.” The event is free and open to the public.

International pianist to visit Northern State University

ABERDEEN, S.D. – International pianist Dr. Pei-Lei Lin will visit Northern State University to work with students and present a public performance.

Lin, assistant professor of piano at the University of Jinan in China, will perform a piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, in NSU’s Krikac Auditorium. The recital is free and open to the public.

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State University School of Fine Arts will hold two scholarship events this winter for high school students.

The Friends of the Arts/NSU Young Artist Competition will take place Saturday, Jan. 11, and the annual School of Fine Arts Scholarship Invitational will be held Feb. 21-22. Both events will take place in the Johnson Fine Arts Center.
