ABERDEEN, S.D. — Dr. Kenneth Boulton, dean of the School of Fine Arts at Northern State University, will retire in June 2027 after 11 years leading Northern's art, music and opera-theatre programs. The 2026-27 academic year, which coincides with Northern's 125th anniversary, will be his final year as dean.
"Dr. Ken Boulton's years of service as dean of the School of Fine Arts at Northern State University represent a strong commitment to our students, faculty and the arts," said Dr. Alan LaFave, president of Northern State University. "Through his leadership, vision and dedication, he has helped strengthen the fine arts at NSU and made a lasting impact on our university community. We are deeply grateful for his service and the many ways he has championed creativity, excellence and opportunity throughout his tenure."
Boulton joined Northern as the School of Fine Arts prepared to return to the renovated Johnson Fine Arts Center, which reopened in fall 2016 following a two-year, $15 million remodeling project. The renovation included an expanded lobby, a redesigned main theater with improved acoustics, a black box theater, a new art gallery, and new classrooms, practice rooms and studios. Today, the Johnson Fine Arts Center hosts more than 65 university, community and regional performances each year.
During Boulton's tenure, the School of Fine Arts added new spaces and programs reflecting changes in how students create and produce art. Boulton oversaw the construction of the Molded Fiber Glass South Dakota Art Pavilion, the upgrading of art studios in Dacotah Hall, and the openings of the NSU Moving-Imagery Lab, NSU Cinematic-Auditory Virtual Environments Lab and Gallery X.
Over the past 11 years, under Boulton's leadership, the School of Fine Arts added a master's degree in art education and transitioned all art degrees into Bachelor of Fine Arts programs. Boulton led the music and art programs through successful 10-year accreditations by the National Association of Schools of Music and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. Recently, the music faculty developed an interdisciplinary arts technology emphasis in the Bachelor of Arts in Music program, combining digital sound design, technical theatre and digital art design.
Boulton also expanded support for the School of Fine Arts through the Friends of the Arts/NSU. Partnering with the NSU Foundation, Boulton raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in gifts to support fine arts programs and student scholarships.
"Dr. Boulton has been a thoughtful and collaborative colleague and a strong advocate for the School of Fine Arts," said Dr. Erin Fouberg, provost and vice president for academic affairs. "He understands the important role Northern's fine arts programs play for both our students and the region. I am grateful for his leadership and his many years of service to Northern."
"Serving as dean of the NSU School of Fine Arts for the past 11 years has been the greatest honor of my career," Boulton said. "The students and faculty have been tremendous partners to work with, and the administration has shown vigorous support both in times of strategic challenge and opportunity. I am very optimistic about the school's future and look forward to seeing the next chapter unfold."
A Grammy-nominated pianist, Boulton has maintained an active performance career while serving as dean. His recording Louisiana: A Pianist's Journey earned a Grammy nomination for Best Classical Instrumental Soloist. His discography includes nine recordings of solo and chamber music, much of it devoted to contemporary American composers. He has performed nationally and internationally, including at the Moscow Conservatory and Oxford University.
Before joining Northern, Boulton was professor of piano at Southeastern Louisiana University and served as head of its Department of Fine and Performing Arts from 2011 to 2015. He earned his bachelor's degree in piano performance from Washington State University and his master's and doctoral degrees in piano performance from the University of Maryland, College Park.
