Brownfield, Mitchell receive 2020 NSU Outstanding Faculty Awards

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University has named Drs. Kristi Brownfield and Jon Mitchell winners of this year’s Outstanding Faculty Awards.

This is the first year the award has included two categories. Mitchell, associate professor of biology, is the 2020 Foundation Faculty Excellence Award winner. Brownfield, assistant professor of sociology, is the 2020 Outstanding Early Career Faculty Award winner.

ABERDEEN, S.D. – With the recent events concerning COVID-19 and social distancing, professors all over the nation have been teaching their previously in-person classes exclusively online. With this sudden migration, however, some classes have proven more challenging to adapt to an online format than others. In particular, many professors who teach courses based in the arts have had to get especially creative.

NSU Counseling Center offering virtual consultations

ABERDEEN, S.D. – While Northern State University has moved to online learning due to the COVID-19 virus, the NSU Counseling Center is still available for virtual consultations and/or sessions with students.

The sessions and consultations are available via phone or via a HIPAA-compliant Zoom videoconferencing platform.

NSU students present at poster session; two undergraduate research grants awarded

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Undergraduate research is strong at Northern State University, with two students presenting at a Pierre poster session earlier this year and two more student projects awarded grant funding this spring.

At the 2020 Legislative Poster Session at the Capitol building, Shayla Steinley and Madison Rutter presented their project, “The Effects of CRISPR Cas-9 System on Progeny of Hereditary Parkinson’s Disease in C. elegans.”

NSU Counseling Center Director takes on interim Student Affairs leadership role

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University Counseling Center Director Heather Aldentaler will take on an additional leadership role for the university, serving as Interim Dean of Student Affairs.

Aldentaler, who has worked at Northern since 2018, said she’s humbled and excited about being selected for the position.

“I’m really excited to be able to support NSU and its students in another capacity,” she said. “It’s just a wonderful opportunity.”

Wolves Academy provides online lessons for area children

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University education student Tristen Henke believes every child needs a support system – and as an educator, she can be just that.

“I still remember my own elementary teachers that made me feel important, safe, and cared for,” said Henke, a senior from Center, N.D. “I truly believe I learned best from these caring professionals.”
