Test Proctoring
Northern provides proctor services for tests that require a secure testing environment. Please visit Proctoring.
Language Placement
Northern offers language placement tests to help ensure you enroll in language classes appropriate for your experience level. Visit Language Placement Testing.
ACT
The national ACT test is given on campus approximately six times a year. To register, contact your local high school counselor or log on to actstudent.org.
Residual ACT
Students enrolling at Northern who missed the national test dates can schedule a residual ACT by contacting the Testing Center at 605-626-2029 or emailing nsuproctor@northern.edu.
Students interested in residual testing do not have to complete a registration form or register online. Score reports from residual ACT tests are only valid at Northern and will not transfer to another institution.
SAT
The National SAT test is given on campus approximately four times a year. To register, contact your local high school counselor or log on to SAT Registration | College Board.
CLEP
CLEP testing is scheduled by appointment throughout the school year. Information regarding exams, testing centers and more can be found at collegeboard.com/clep. Northern is an open testing center, which means any student may test, even if they're not enrolled at Northern.

ACCUPLACER
ACCUPLACER placement tests comprise three separate exams: writing, math, and reading. Students who take the ACCUPLACER test(s) but are not enrolling at NSU or another South Dakota Board of Regents institution will be charged according to the current mandatory fee structure. Students are allowed to challenge the ACT or ACCUPLACER placement once per semester at the current mandated fee.

PRAXIS
The Praxis core consists of reading (5712), writing (5722), and math (5732). Praxis II (content and PLT) information can be found at https://ets.org/praxis/register. Northern administers the Praxis Core and Praxis II exams via computer.

TOEFL iBT
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT) tests English speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Information (including testing dates) can be found at ets.org/toefl.
GRE, GMAT, MCAT, LSAT
Northern does not administer the GRE, GMAT, MCAT or LSAT. Testing information is available below:

NSU Exit Exams
All baccalaureate candidates must complete the appropriate exit exam(s) in their major field(s) of study. Testing should take place in the student's final semester to ensure that relevant material covered on the test will have been covered in coursework.
