  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – When Jim Kurkowski first started as a student at Northern State, he never dreamed he’d one day finish his education entirely online – there weren’t even computers on campus back then.

    Kurkowski, 74, of Webster, is graduating this weekend 57 years after he first enrolled at Northern. He has earned his bachelor’s degree in general education from NSU with a certificate in public history, taking all of his courses online.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – When Jessica McClain started as a Northern State University student four years ago, she took advantage of NSU TRIO Student Support Services offerings such as tutoring, workshops and events.

    Now as a TRIO peer mentor, she’s the one putting on financial literacy workshops – and the one helping other students just starting out in college.

    McClain, a senior from Leola majoring in sociology, said she likes being able to give back.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University will host a “Lemons for Leukemia” event on campus to add people to the national Be the Match registry.

    The event will take place 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday, April 30, in the NSU Student Center lobby. People who participate will have their cheeked swabbed to have their tissue type included in the national registry, which could potentially help patients in need of a stem cell transplant.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University students will host a fundraising basketball game for Aspire’s Special Olympic basketball team on April 24 at 6 p.m. in the Barnett Center.

    The fundraiser is being put on by students of the NSU PE 352 Adapted Physical Education class. It is being held in conjunction with the Aberdeen Fraternal Order of Police and the NSU men’s basketball team.

    A raffle and silent auction will be held featuring signed Northern memorabilia. The men’s basketball team will also be available to take pictures and sign autographs.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University School of Business student Ty Dillabough recently took first place in Sales and Marketing Executives Inc. of Sioux Falls’ (SME) 2018 scholarship competition.

    Dillabough is a sophomore business marketing major from Cochrane, Alberta, Canada.

    Dillabough received first place honors and a $2,000 scholarship after competing in a sales role-play, judged on creativity, presentation skills, interaction skills of the product or service, sales, persuasion and ability to respond to questions and objections.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University will host a plant sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, April 23, and from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, in Mewaldt-Jensen 144B, the NSU greenhouse classroom.

    Plants for sale will include geraniums, small snake plants and a large number of succulents.

    Proceeds will fund the NSU Environmental Club.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. - Northern State University will present Lauren Gunderson's 65-minute one woman play “Natural Shocks” as part of a national campaign of theater activism against gun violence at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 20, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Black Box Theater.

    Willoughby, the daughter of Jeff and Julie Willoughby of Midland, graduated from T.F. Riggs High School in 2015.Fellbaum, the son of Dale and Alice Fellbaum of Spearfish, graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 2011.
