  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University’s Dr. Andrew Russell, assistant professor of biology, was recently chosen as a recipient of a South Dakota Board of Regents Competitive Research Grant.

    Russell’s proposal is entitled “Analysis of Pseudomonas Syringae Virulence Factors Inducing Host DNA Damage.”

    Russell’s project “aims to understand how pathogens damage host DNA and, thereby, could provide insight into mechanisms of virulence that should be of interest to various external funding entities,” according to his proposal.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University’s Dr. Kenneth Boulton, dean of the School of Fine Arts, has been chosen to be the featured artist/clinician at the 2018 North Dakota Music Teachers Association State Conference.

    The conference will take place June 13-15 at Dickinson State University in Dickinson, N.D.

    Boulton will present a piano recital, entitled “Four Generations of American Piano Music,” a lecture-demonstration, entitled “They Wrote for Kids, Too” and two piano masterclasses.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University’s Dr. John Long has published an article in the scholarly journal, Weather and Climate Extremes.

    “Tornado seasonality in the southeastern United States” examined whether any shifts in tornado seasonality have occurred in the region of the southeastern United States over the past seven decades. Long co-authored the article with Paul Stoy and Tobias Gerken, both of Montana State University.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. –  The Northern State University Johnson Fine Arts Center Gallery will play host to Sharon Kagan’s art exhibition through Aug. 15.

    Kagan is a multimedia artist who utilizes knitting, photography and drawing as the foundation of her personal lexicon.

    Kagan has a B.A. from UCLA and an M.A. in sculpture from Otis Art Institute, where she trained with Betye Saar and Germano Celant. Between undergraduate and graduate school she worked as a core member of “The Dinner Party,” Judy Chicago's seminal feminist installation project.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Darcy Usher didn’t know she wanted to be an archivist until she got a job in the Northern State University library archives—she loves learning about histories and being able to help tell the stories for others.

    “I’m a sucker for a good story,” said Usher, who will be a junior this fall at NSU.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Online registration for the 103rd annual Northern State University Homecoming Parade will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, June 1.

    Individuals and groups interested in entering the parade will be able to access the online form. Registration will include a $25 participation fee. The parade is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 29, with a start time of 9 a.m.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. - Northern State University students Pamela Gruba and Chase Sievers recently received honors at the Brown County Historical Society’s annual Historical Research and Writing Awards.

    Gruba of Grenville received first place honors for her paper, titled “The Second Wounded Knee: An Effectual Response to Centuries of Injustices.”

    Sievers of Gettysburg received third place honors for his paper, titled “The Allies of Joseph R. McCarthy.”

    Both students received a certificate and a cash prize for their winning papers.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University graduate Annika van Oosbree of Maple Grove, Minn., recently became the first NSU student to have an honors thesis published in a professional publication.

    Van Oosbree’s thesis, entitled “Phenotypic effects of probiotics on Xenopus laevis development,” was coauthored by Dr. Alyssa Kiesow, NSU associate professor of biology, and was published in the sixth volume of the “Journal of Student Research.”
