    ABERDEEN, S.D. – Karlie Brown came to Northern State University with a plan: earn a teaching degree and find a job somewhere in the area.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – At Northern State University’s Friends of the Arts/NSU Young Artist Competition, 19 talented high school juniors and seniors from South Dakota, North Dakota and Minnesota performed for NSU faculty judging panels throughout the event on Jan. 11.

    The event, held in Johnson Fine Arts Center, offered awards with a total of $7,000 in cash prizes, including $1,000 for first-place winners of each category, $500 for second-place winners, and $250 for third-place winners.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State University Symphonic Band will present a concert, “Journeys,” at 3 p.m. Feb. 9 in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Harvey and Cynthia Jewett Theater.

    The concert, the second in a series of performances with music from around the world, will feature Fritz Hemke, alto saxophone; Aldous Ulvog, piano; Quincy Rudolph, bass; Roger Frank, drums; and Dr. Terry Beckler, cahon.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Longtime Northern State University faculty member Dr. Doug Ohmer has been named the new dean of the NSU School of Business.

    Ohmer, associate professor of management, has worked at Northern for 26 years, serving as interim School of Business dean this academic year.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – The exhibition “The Recent Works of Peter Kilian” by Northern’s Peter Kilian will be on display in the Northern State University Johnson Fine Arts Center Gallery January 13 through February 28. The opening reception will be held 6:30-8:30p.m. on Thursday, February 20.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – The spring 2020 Northern State University Noon Forums will kick off Wednesday, Jan. 29, at noon in the Williams Library Round Room with visiting Chinese pianist Dr. Pei-Lei Lin.

    Students who have earned at least a 3.5 grade point average for the semester are eligible for the dean’s list. There are four categories:

    • Full-time students with a GPA of 4.0.
    • Full-time students with a GPA of 3.5-3.99.
    • Part-time students with a GPA of 4.0.

  • Students, staff excited about new SDSBVI

    ABERDEEN, S.D. – On Monday morning, 16-year-old Ch'oshgai Roanhorse marveled at something he had never experienced in all of his nine years as a student of the South Dakota School for the Blind and Visually Impaired: a second-floor view.

    “Oh my gosh,” exclaimed Roanhorse, of Sisseton, who has low vision, as he looked out the window. “There was no view in our school like this before.”
