  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University has named Dr. Michael Wanous its new Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

    Wanous, who earned his Ph.D. in genetics from the University of Missouri in Columbia, is currently the vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty at Indiana’s Huntington University. Prior to that, he was a professor at Augustana University in Sioux Falls, where his positions also included associate academic dean, natural science division chair and biology department chair.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University College of Arts and Sciences student ShyAnn Springer recently received a $5,000 scholarship from the SR Education Group to study abroad in Japan.

    Springer is a junior English major with an emphasis in TESOL from Bradley, S.D.

    To receive this scholarship, Springer answered two open-ended, personal questions that were evaluated by a panel of judges. Students who wrote the most persuasive, compelling, and well-written arguments were considered finalists.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University 2019 graduate Christine Powers and third-year student Shelby Glover have been accepted into the Open Jar Institute in New York City.

    Founded in 2003, the Open Jar Institute is one of New York City’s most Broadway-integrated actor training program and provides select students intensive one-on-one training with some of Broadway's biggest stars, performers, directors, choreographers, agents and casting directors.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – A brand new wolf will soon be watching over the Jewett Regional Science Education Center when it opens this fall at Northern State University.

    South Dakota sculptor John Lopez is creating the wolf sculpture, which will stand in front of the main entrance of the science center.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Dr. Elvira Sanatullova-Allison will step down from her role as dean of the Millicent Atkins School of Education at Northern State University.

    Sanatullova-Allison will transition to a tenured faculty position, a change that will give her the opportunity to focus more closely on working with students and developing future educators.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University School of Business Dean Dr. Tim Mantz has announced that he will leave Northern to take a new higher education opportunity at Cabrini University.

    Mantz cited personal reasons for the move to the private college in Pennsylvania.

    “It’s an opportunity to move home,” he said.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Confucius Institute at Northern State University will close effective June 21, 2020.

    The decision was made after a thorough review of Northern’s international programs and activities. The university seeks to shift resources strategically toward services more aligned with its mission, including study abroad programs.

    Blair, associate professor of art and Northern Galleries director, was announced as this year’s winner during Northern’s spring commencement ceremony on Saturday.
