  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Aberdeen University-Civic Symphony opens the 2018-19 season on Nov. 3 with a fun-filled program of familiar works by Shostakovich, Vivaldi and Howard Hanson, called “Festive Opening.”

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – More than 50 Northern State University students and employees gave back to the Aberdeen community on Sunday, Oct. 14, in support of NSU’s fifth annual Pack Gives Back event.

    Following a speech from NSU President Dr. Tim Downs on the importance of community leadership and involvement, students volunteered at different nonprofit sites in the community.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Several years of effort to gather the history of a substantial South Dakota ethnic group are coming to fruition with the grand opening of the South Dakota Germans from Russia Cultural Center.  The center can be found in Beulah Williams Library on the campus of Northern State University.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State University Theater Department will present the musical "Man of La Mancha" in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Harvey and Cynthia Jewett Theater.

    Performances will run at 7:30 p.m. nightly Oct. 17-20.

    One of the most honored musicals of the American theater, “Man of La Mancha” was inspired by Miguel de Cervantes’ 17th Century masterpiece “Don Quixote.” It received five Tony Awards, including one for best musical play, as well as the Drama Critics Circle Award for best musical.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – A generous gift from Plains Commerce Bank will help with construction of the new South Dakota School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, one of three projects of the Educational Impact Campaign.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – A groundbreaking ceremony is planned for the new South Dakota School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

    The public is welcome at the ceremony, which will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, in the parking lot north of the former site of Jerde Hall. Guests are encouraged to park in the Barnett Center parking lot, and attend a reception in the Barnett Center lobby following the groundbreaking.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Brigette Weisenburger will have her senior recital at 2 p.m. Oct. 14 in Northern State University’s Krikac Auditorium.

    Weisenburger, who is pursuing a B.A. in music, plays the piano. She will perform “Sonata in A Major, K331” by W.A. Mozart; “Romanian Folk Dances, Sz. 56” by Bela Bartok; and “Lovesong” by Joseph Suk. The recital is free and open to the public.

    Weisenburger, the daughter of Gayland and Mardell Weisenburger, is an Aberdeen native who was homeschooled, graduating in 1995. She has studied with Dr. Marcela Faflak during her time… more

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University’s Dr. Greg Blair has published a book that explores a form of wandering as an act of political resistance.

    “Errant Bodies, Mobility, and Political Resistance,” was published in September by Palgrave Macmillan. Blair is associate professor of art and Northern Galleries Director at NSU.

    The title of his book refers to "errant bodies," a type of physical and philosophical wandering that is intentional, operating as a means of resistance against authoritative forms of power and cultural prescriptions.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Dominika Blum’s love for travel developed as a child growing up in Poland, when she traveled with her mom to a new place every summer.

    “I just thought it was amazing seeing the beauty of each place and taking it all in,” said Blum.

    That love for travel has taken Blum to more than 35 countries – and led her to a position at Northern State University, where she encourages students to explore the world.

    As NSU Study Abroad and CEIB Advisor, Blum’s goal is to get more students to take advantage of the university’s more than 100 study… more
