  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Plans for a regional sports complex at Northern State University are moving forward, thanks to approval by the South Dakota Board of Regents.

    The board voted unanimously to approve the NSU Regional Sports Complex Facility Program Plan at its meeting Wednesday on the Northern campus. The plan will next go before the South Dakota Legislature for consideration during the 2019 legislative session.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University’s new state-of-the-art science center will be named after a longtime regent who was instrumental in securing approval for the facility.

    The Harvey C. Jewett IV Regional Science Education Center, currently under construction on the Northern campus, will open for the fall 2019 semester. The South Dakota Board of Regents approved the facility’s name at its meeting today at NSU.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Wells Fargo has awarded a grant to Northern State University’s Regional Science Education Center that will fund an educational garden containing plants native to the Dakotas.

    The Wells Fargo Indigenous Plants Research Garden will be located south of the student entrance of the science center, near the new greenhouse and visible from the parking lot adjacent to the Johnson Fine Arts Center.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – On Saturday, Dec. 8, 108 students will graduate from Northern State University at its 2018 winter commencement.

    The ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m. in the NSU Johnson Fine Arts Center.

    Delivering the commencement address will be NSU Associate Professor of English Dr. Peter Ramey, Northern’s 2018 Outstanding Faculty Award winner. Saturday’s student speaker will be 2018-19 Student Association President Shanae Doerr.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Two Northern State University students won this year’s Concerto-Aria Competition.

    Held on Nov. 17, the competition is a project of the Aberdeen University/Civic Symphony in which vocal competitors must perform arias from operas. Instrumental competitors perform classical, romantic, impressionist and modern compositions, including works for soloist and orchestra.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Jarrod Holmgren’s senior art exhibition will be on display in the Northern State University Isaac Lincoln Gallery Dec. 3-14.

    A reception for the exhibition will be held from 7-9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, in the Isaac Lincoln Gallery.

    Holmgren grew up in Clara City, Minn., graduating from Maccray High School in 2011. He is the son of Cary and Becky Holmgren of Clara City, Minn.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Starting in January, Northern State University will offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art and Bachelor of Fine Arts in Digital Media.

    The degrees were approved by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, making Northern one of only two universities in the state accredited to offer these degrees.

    The accreditation means Northern has faculty at the Ph.D. level in the area of art history and criticism, which not many schools have, said NSU Art Department Chair Sara Christensen Blair.
