  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University Opera will present the dinner and show event, Michael Ching’s “Speed Dating Tonight!”

    This comic, one-act opera was conceived after a conversation with character tenor and stage director, Dean Anthony and premiered in 2013. The opera doesn’t include any actual speed dating, but is meant to reflect the real-life quirks of modern dating and is comprised of 90-second “dates” which are brief arias and duets.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University will host a piano duo recital from two pianists on the faculty at the University of North Dakota.

    “Teepen-Sugiura Piano Duo: Piano Romantics Plus” will take place at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Harvey and Cynthia Jewett Theater. The performance, which is free and open to the public, will feature international concert artists Nariaki Sugiura and Keith Teepen.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State University School of Fine Arts will hold two scholarship events this winter for high school students – including a brand new arts competition.

    The new NSU Young Artist Competition will take place Saturday, Jan. 5, and the annual School of Fine Arts Scholarship Invitational will be held Feb. 22-23. Both events will take place in the Johnson Fine Arts Center.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – The 49th annual South Dakota Jazz Festival Concert will be held Thursday, Jan. 17, at Northern State University, featuring Latin Jazz phenom Nachito Herrera.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – An article by recent Northern State University graduate Chase Sievers has been published in two partnered online journals.

    Sievers, of Aberdeen, is a spring 2018 NSU graduate majoring in criminal justice. His article, “The American Torture Problem,” is featured in both “Compass” and “Starting Points.”

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University employees are getting the option to complete campus safety training thanks to a program offered by the Aberdeen Police Department.

    APD is offering ALICE active shooter training to faculty and staff across campus, including in all of the academic colleges as well as departments such as Admissions and Student Affairs.

    ALICE is an options-based program that stands for alert, lockdown, inform, counter, evacuate, and it’s a method that the APD says works well in school settings.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University students Madison Rutter and Shayla Steinley have recently been chosen as recipients of an NSU Undergraduate Competitive Research Grant.

    Rutter and Steinley’s project is titled “The Effects of CRISPER Cas-9 System on Progeny of Hereditary Parkinson's Disease in C. elegans.”

    Steinley is a junior biology major with minors in chemistry and psychology from Lakeville, Minn. She is a member of the NSU softball team and is involved in the honors program and SAAC.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Artist Jay Hopkins’ “Reflection” exhibition will be on display in the Northern State University Johnson Fine Arts Center Gallery through Jan. 25.

    A closing reception for the exhibition will be held in the JFAC Gallery from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 17.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – The 3M Foundation has awarded a $25,000 grant to the Northern State University Harvey C. Jewett IV Regional Science Education Center.
