  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Northern State University Department of Music recently held its 2021 Friends of the Arts/NSU Young Artist Competition, where 22 talented high school juniors and seniors from South Dakota, North Dakota and Minnesota submitted video recordings for NSU faculty judging panels.

    The event was held virtually this year, and offered awards with a total of $6,250 in cash prizes, including $1,000 for first-place winners of each category, $500 for second-place winners, and $250 for third-place winners. Top music scholarships will also be… more

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – The 51st annual South Dakota Jazz Festival will take place on Thursday, Jan. 21, at Northern State University.

    The festival will take place in the Johnson Fine Arts Center. Five local school groups will be performing and having jazz clinics with NSU fine arts faculty, following mask, distance and performance protocols:

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University Assistant Professor of Voice Dr. Marla Fogderud will present a lecture recital, “Grieg and Mozart: Emotion Through Song,” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Jewett Theater.

    Joining Fogderud at the recital will be guest pianist Dr. Jean Hellner. The event, which explores how the two composers approached common emotions in their songs, is a co-production of the NSU School of Fine Arts and the Edvard Grieg Society of the Dakotas.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University will hold a virtual artist talk for artist and NSU alumna Becky Grismer, whose exhibit, “Taking Root,” is currently on display in the Johnson Fine Arts Center Art Gallery.

    The virtual event, hosted by Northern Galleries, will take place on Feb. 4 at 8 p.m. Central Time. Grismer, of Spearfish, will discuss her artistic process and the various thematic elements of her exhibit. There will be also be a question and answer session.

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – Becky Pribyl has been named the new Director of Financial Aid for Northern State University.

    A Northern graduate, Pribyl has worked at NSU for more than 20 years. She started in 1999 as a work-study student in the Financial Aid Office before being hired full time in 2003 as Financial Aid Counselor. Since 2011, she has worked as Assistant Director of Financial Aid.

    Pribyl begins in her new position on Dec. 24, replacing longtime Financial Aid Director Sharon Kienow. Kienow is retiring after a 40-year career… more

  • ABERDEEN, S.D. – A partnership between Northern State University and Red Rooster Coffee House will bring a tasty new brew to the region – and scholarship money to students.

    NSU and the Red Rooster have teamed up to offer Wolves Blend fresh roasted coffee beans. The coffee – a Certified Fair Trade, organic medium roast – will be available starting in early January, though a few test bags are available for sale at the coffee house this week.
